SALEM,Ore., (03/16/2015)– Nutrition is easy as 1, 2, beef! No, but really, 3 oz. of lean beef fulfills half your daily serving of protein! This was the message Oregon Cattlemen’s Association’s Communications team, (director Kayli and intern Allyn), proudly proclaimed during the 2015 OSNA State Conference and Food and Equipment Show.

Several hundred school nutritionists and cafeteria directors converged on the Salem Conference center Saturday March 14th to meet with food vendors from all over Oregon. OCA’s beef booth was well received and had many visitors inquiring over beef’s health benefits, its different cuts, and how to re-introduce information about Oregon ranching into school classrooms.

OCA’s intern Allyn Amerongen said, “I thought OCA’s presence was well received.” Some of the people that came by expressed a concern over current youth’s lack of knowledge as to where their beef comes from. This is something OCA is hoping to fix. “People seemed to genuinely appreciate having us there as an educational source that teaches where beef actually comes from,” Amerongen said.

During the event, OCA held a drawing for a free lean beef cookbook. Jamie Smith from school district 40 in McMinnville was the winner. Initially, Smith said that spaghetti or tacos might be her favorite way to serve school kids beef, but after some thought she changed her answer to an all American classic. “The cheeseburger is really popular in the elementary schools,” Smith said. “Actually, everybody’s favorite meal is a cheeseburger!”

The Oregon Cattlemen’s Association was founded in 1913 and works to promote environmentally and socially sound industry practices, improve and strengthen the economics of the industry, and protect its industry communities and private property rights.
